KUALA LUMPUR, 13 March 2019 — TNB Research Sdn. Bhd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tenaga Nasional Malaysia (TNB), today jointly signed a Research Collaboration Agreement with Korean Consortium Members consist of three companies; namely I-ON Communications, Busan City Gas, and KH Shinhwa SnC.
TNB Research is presently assigned into this collaboration to jointly demonstrate the Virtual Power Plant technology in Malaysia. Speaking at the side-line after the document exchange ceremony, Ir. Dr. Mohd Fadzil Mohd Siam, Chief Strategy Officer of TNB Research said: “TNB Research is delighted to be part of this collaborative initiative between Malaysia and Korea. The utility world has changed drastically for the last few years. New technologies like Virtual Power Plant, Smart Meters and fully functional Smart Grid concepts have made large inroads into the utility space and no one should want to be left behind.”
The two main objectives of the project are to demonstrate Energy Storage System based Aggregator Type Virtual Power Plant Model and to develop energy and aggregator controller system for the virtual power plant. At the ceremony witnessed by Korean Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE), The Hon. Mr. Yunmo Sung, all four companies agreed to use their respective undertaking to collaborate, support each other and work together for the planning, development and successful implementation of this Project. Virtual power plant is a concept which includes a network of energy storage or/and distributed generation resources within an area often at the distribution side, linked together to meet utility and consumer challenges such as reduction of peak load (peak tariff) and maximum demand, spinning reserve, frequency regulation, forecasting of sufficient supply to meet the demand, and reducing intermittency of renewable resources.

Busan City Gas. Co. Ltd. is a Korea-based company engaged in the distribution of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in Busan City. The Company mainly operates city gas business. Its LNG is purchased from Korea Gas Corporation. Its LNG is mainly used in office buildings, residential applications, industrial applications, cold and warm water supply systems, transportations and power generation systems.
About Busan City Gas Shinwha SnC is a Solution provider and Consultant of Smart Energy, Smart City and Smart Farm. Shinhwa was reorganized and became a cooperative partner of KH Vatec with stratigic investment for new business development in 2017.
