KUALA LUMPUR, 1 October 2019: The European Union Film
Festival (EUFF) returns once more to selected Golden Screen Cinemas.
Celebrating its 20th anniversary in Malaysia, The EUFF remains one
of the most anticipated international film festivals in the country. This year, a more focused programme promises to
showcase the dynamism, breadth and innovation of contemporary European cinema,
as well as the cultural diversity of Europe, with critically-acclaimed films
from across the continent.

The European Union Film Festival will take place at
selected Golden Screen Cinemas outlets in Kuala
Lumpur (17 – 27 October) – GSC Mid Valley, GSC Pavilion KL, GSC 1 Utama -
and Penang (31 October - 6 November) –
GSC Gurney Plaza. Since its first edition in 2000, the EUFF has brought
together film enthusiasts, students, families and even people looking for their
first foreign-language film experience.
Spanning animation, drama, romance, comedy, adventure, family films and
documentaries, the wide ranging programme is a testament to Europe's continued
creativity and diversity and has something for everyone's tastes. "Europe has never been just one, but many
cultures, languages and lifestyles. Through EUFF, we celebrate our cultural
diversity. We put culture at the centre of our international partnerships
around the world, including with Malaysia," said H.E. Maria Castillo
Fernandez, Ambassador and Head of the EU Delegation to Malaysia. "We hope that these films not only entertain,
inspire and teach us about European culture but also open people's eyes to how
both European and Malaysian people enjoy cultural diversity," she added.
The 19 award-winning films this year come from 15
European countries. The festival line-up also features films from non-European
Union countries Switzerland and Norway. Most of the films are collaborations or
joint-productions between European countries and many are courtesy of a project
by the European Commission managed by a Consortium formed by Goethe-Institut
(lead), Institut Français and Cineuropa, the portal for the promotion of the
European cinema. These films bring to life the fact that Europe, just like
Malaysia, is united in our diversity and highlight that story-telling and art
have no barriers across cultures and countries. This year, Romania's inspirational feature film, Beside Me, will open the film festival
with a heart-breaking story that explores the idea of human connectivity.
Directed by the first Romanian disabled filmmaker, Tedy Necula, Beside Me is a telling reminder that we
are all strangers until something brings us together. It is a story about
empathy, self-awareness and tolerance, messages that are relevant today.
Les
Invisibles, the film screened
at the press conference, is a comedy about a group of social workers who do
everything in their power to help the homeless women within their shelter
reintegrate into society and is an example of Europe’s commitment to social
justice. Many of the main characters are played by former homeless women who
are not professional actors. The director, Louis-Julien Petit, spent a year
volunteering in women’s homeless shelters in Grenoble and Paris, saying he
wanted to get the tone of the film right. Six films –Lada
Kamenski (Croatia), Winter Flies
(Czech Republic), Ailo's Journey
(Finland), The Romantic Exiles (Spain), Don't Stop Me Now (Italy), and As
Needed (Italy) –– will be screened for free at all
participating cinemas. Coupons for the free screenings can be downloaded or
screenshot from www.euff.com.my and

The 20th European Union Film Festival is organised by

embassies and cultural institutions of 13 European Union Member States, and

Synopsis of movie:
In a classroom in Sicily, just inside the walls of Fortress
Europe, recently arrived refugees receive lessons from a teacher who has some
rather unbalanced traits. One moment he mercilessly rejects the refugees – the
next, mollifyingly, he embraces them.
Operating at the intersection of documentary and fiction, STRANGER IN PARADISE
investigates the power relations between Europe and refugees. Europe is
represented by a teacher who drags his class of refugees down into his despair.
A plea that borders on the immoral; a welcome charged with a guilt complex; and
the compromise between these, made policy: STRANGER IN PARADISE is an
unflinching film essay on the mechanisms through which Europe tackles the
refugees’ desire for happiness.
