Kuala Lumpur 26 September: THE Society for the Rehabilitation of the Disabled of Selangor and Federal Territory (PPOC), also known as Rumah Insaniah Tun Dr Siti Hasmah, received more than RM50,000 thanks to fundraising efforts at the 11th Latin American Festival.
The proceeds from the sale of raffle tickets and food at the festival, which was held in June at Plaza Low Yat and bbpark Bukit Bintang, were handed over to PPOC at a cheque presentation ceremony.
The festival was jointly organised by Group of Latin America and the Caribbean (Grulac) embassies in Malaysia with Plaza Low Yat and Federal Hotels International (FHI) Group of Hotels, supported by the Latin Women’s Association of Malaysia and Kuala Lumpur City Hall. The participating embassies were Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico and Peru.
The funds, she said, would be used to buy equipment for the PPOC bakery, training arrows for its archery team, washers and dryers for the laundry, custom-made foot orthosis with walking shoes and a ROHO wheelchair seat cushion. We provide workshops and we train people with disabilities according to their capabilities. We also provide subsidised boarding for them at our facility in Petaling Jaya, ” Siti Ruhani added.
Latin Women’s Association presient Gisela Zeiner said, “We as an association have always believed in and worked towards positive change. This year, we are happy to be able to raise RM50,350 for the PPOC. ”She said the association’s task each year was to help the embassies decide which societies would receive funds raised at the festival. “We see if they have well-organised projects and do a follow-up on the work they have done.
“We also look for at least two or three options. Then together with the embassies, we decide which one to help each year, ” she added. Meanwhile, Cuban ambassador Ibete Fernandez Hernandez said Grulac was happy to present the donations to PPOC. “We, the Latin American embassies, are satisfied that we are able to make a difference to the lives of needy folk. “This event has demonstrated that culture is a bridge and it is the most simple and noble way to contribute to different causes.We have successfully maintained this festival for 11 years. People are getting more used to seeing Latin Americans in Malaysia and they are more eager to know about us.
Plaza Low Yat executive area general manager Michael Lee said, “This is the ninth consecutive year we have hosted this festival. We definitely want to continue hosting this event as we want to spread awareness of cultures, arts and food of other countries among Malaysians, he added.
